PTE basics — what it is and who accepts it
If you're new to PTE or comparing it with IELTS, start here. These are the questions every first-time test taker asks before deciding.
What is PTE Academic and why are Nepali students choosing it?
PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a fully computer-based English proficiency test used for university admissions, skilled migration and work visas globally. It's scored on a 10–90 scale and accepted by 3,000+ programs at 1,700+ institutions worldwide.
Nepali students prefer PTE because it's 100% computer-scored — no nervous face-to-face interview, no human grader bias on speaking, and results typically land in your inbox within 2 business days instead of 13 like some IELTS variants.
Is PTE easier than IELTS for Nepali students?
Honestly — it depends on your strengths. PTE is generally easier if you're comfortable with a computer, type quickly, and prefer predictable scoring. IELTS suits students who speak more naturally with a person but struggle to type fast.
The difficulty level of the English itself is similar in both. What changes is the format and how it's evaluated. Most of our students who scored below 6.5 in IELTS Speaking jump to PTE 65+ (equivalent of IELTS 7) once they get familiar with the AI scoring.
Who recognises PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is accepted by 100% of universities in Australia and New Zealand, 99% of universities in the UK, and a fast-growing number in Canada, the US, Ireland and across Europe. Australia's Department of Home Affairs accepts PTE for all visa subclasses including 482, 485, 189, 190 and 491. UK Visas & Immigration accepts it as a Secure English Language Test (SELT).
What is the score range for PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is scored on a 10–90 scale (Global Scale of English). Most Nepali students target 65+ for university admission and 79+ for permanent residency in Australia. The 10–90 scoring did NOT change in the August 2025 format update.
How is PTE different from PTE Core and PTE Home?
Three Pearson tests, three different uses:
- PTE Academic — for university admission and Australia/NZ skilled migration. Most Nepali students take this one.
- PTE Core — for Canadian economic immigration (IRCC accepts it for Express Entry).
- PTE Home (A1/A2/B1) — for UK family/settlement visas only.
If you're unsure which one you need, send us your visa subclass or university name on WhatsApp — we'll confirm the right one for your case.
The new shorter PTE format explained
Pearson updated the PTE Academic format in August 2025. Here's what actually changed and what didn't.
How long is the new PTE test in 2026?
The PTE Academic test now takes approximately 2 hours total, down from roughly 3 hours before August 2025. There is no longer a scheduled 10-minute break — the test runs continuously from start to finish.
What sections does PTE Academic have?
PTE Academic is divided into three sections, taken in this order:
- Speaking & Writing (combined) — Personal introduction, Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Summarize Written Text, Essay.
- Reading — Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice, Re-order Paragraphs.
- Listening — Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice, Highlight Correct Summary, Fill in the Blanks, Write from Dictation.
Each section feeds into your four communicative scores: Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing.
Is the scoring scale still 10–90?
Yes. The 10–90 Global Scale of English scoring did not change with the August 2025 update. A score of 65 still equals roughly IELTS 7.0 overall, and 79 still equals IELTS 8.0 — useful if you're targeting Australia 189/190 PR.
Is the test still computer-based?
Yes — 100% computer-based. You type all written answers and speak into a headset microphone. There is no human examiner in the room during your test. AI scoring is what makes PTE results land within 2 business days.
How long are PTE Academic scores valid?
PTE Academic scores are valid for 2 years from your test date. For Australian skilled migration (DHA), the validity is 3 years for some visa subclasses — check the latest DHA rules for your specific subclass.
PTE fee in Nepal 2026 — what it actually costs you
Pearson sets the fee in USD globally. What you pay in NPR depends on the exchange rate that day. Here's how it really works.
How much does PTE Academic cost in Nepal in 2026?
The official PTE Academic fee is USD 248.60 (VAT inclusive). In Nepali Rupees that's roughly NPR 34,000–35,000 depending on the day's USD/NPR rate — but the rupee figure shifts every single day, so we don't publish a fixed NPR price.
WhatsApp us at 9805168171 for today's locked NPR rate before you book.
Can I pay the PTE fee in Nepali Rupees?
Yes — when you book through PTE Nepal you pay in NPR directly using eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay or bank transfer to any Nepali bank. You don't need a USD card or a PayPal account, and you don't pay extra forex conversion fees that international cards charge.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept:
- eSewa
- Khalti
- IME Pay
- Bank transfer (Nabil, NIC Asia, Global IME, NMB, Siddhartha, Prabhu, Kumari, Citizens, Sanima — any Nepali bank works, transfers are instant)
Once payment is confirmed, your test slot is booked within 5 minutes.
Why does the NPR fee keep changing?
Pearson charges in USD (USD 248.60 fixed). The NPR amount changes because the USD/NPR exchange rate shifts daily. When the dollar strengthens, NPR fee goes up. When it weakens, NPR fee comes down — sometimes by NPR 500–1,000 over a single week.
That's why we always confirm today's NPR rate on WhatsApp before booking, rather than printing a static price that'll be wrong tomorrow.
Is there a discount or promo for PTE booking in Nepal?
Pearson occasionally runs promo codes (typically 10–15% off) for limited windows. We pass these promos to our students immediately — see our discounted booking page for the latest active promo, or message us on WhatsApp to check.
Do I pay extra to book through PTE Nepal versus the Pearson website?
No. You pay the same fee — sometimes less, when an active promo is running. What you get extra is: payment in NPR, no USD card needed, slot confirmation within 5 minutes, and a real human on WhatsApp if anything goes wrong. There's no booking surcharge.
How PTE booking actually works through us
Booking PTE in Nepal without a dollar card is the #1 thing students message us about. Here's the process, step by step.
How do I book a PTE test in Nepal?
The fastest route is 4 steps:
- WhatsApp us your preferred date, center (Kathmandu / Pokhara / Itahari / etc.) and full name as on passport.
- We check live availability on Pearson and confirm the slot.
- You pay in NPR via eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay or bank transfer.
- We book the slot under your name. Confirmation email from Pearson lands in your inbox within 5 minutes.
Full step-by-step on our book PTE test page.
How early should I book my PTE date?
For Kathmandu centers in peak months (May–September, December) — book at least 2 weeks in advance. For Pokhara, Itahari, Birgunj and other smaller centers — 1 week is usually fine. For weekday slots in off-peak months, you can sometimes book 24–48 hours before.
Pearson's system allows booking up to 24 hours before test time. Anything closer than 24 hours is not bookable.
Can I book PTE without a USD/dollar card?
Yes — that's exactly why most Nepali students book through us. You pay us in NPR (eSewa/Khalti/IME Pay/bank), we handle the USD payment to Pearson on the back end. You never touch a forex card.
How do I check live PTE date availability?
Two options:
- Pearson's live availability page: mypte.pearsonpte.com — shows all open slots across all 9 Nepal centers.
- WhatsApp us — we check and reply within 5 minutes, and we can also tell you which centers have shorter waiting queues that week.
More on our PTE date in Nepal page.
Can I book PTE for a friend or family member?
Yes. Send us their full name (exactly as printed on their passport), passport number, date of birth, email and preferred date/center. The Pearson account will be created in their name and the confirmation goes to their email — you just handle the payment.
Where can I take PTE in Nepal?
Nepal currently has 9 official Pearson-authorised PTE test centers. Here's a quick rundown.
How many PTE test centers are there in Nepal?
There are 9 official PTE test centers in Nepal spread across major cities: Kathmandu (multiple), Pokhara, Itahari, Birgunj, Butwal, Nepalgunj and Chitwan. Full list with addresses and operating days on our test centers page.
Which is the best PTE center in Kathmandu?
All Kathmandu centers run on the same Pearson hardware and follow the same protocol, so the test experience is identical. What differs is: cubicle separation (some centers have better acoustic dividers), waiting time at reception, and parking.
For our specific recommendation based on your test date and which centers have the quietest sessions, message us on WhatsApp.
Can I take PTE in Pokhara?
Yes. There's an official Pearson-authorised PTE center in Pokhara running tests multiple days per week. We have an office in Pokhara too, so payment, booking and prep coaching all happen locally — no need to travel to Kathmandu.
Are PTE centers outside Kathmandu the same quality?
Yes — every PTE center in Nepal uses identical Pearson hardware (same headsets, same computers, same test version), and Pearson audits each one regularly. Your score is calculated the same way at any center, by the same AI engine, so center choice does not affect your result.
What to bring, what to expect, what's allowed
Test day rules tripped up more than a few of our students before they got familiar with them. Here's the no-surprises version.
What time should I arrive at the PTE test center?
Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled test start time. You'll need this time for biometric verification (photo, signature, palm vein scan), locker assignment and seating. If you arrive late, you forfeit the test and the fee.
What ID do I need for PTE test day?
Your original passport — that's the only accepted ID. The passport must be currently valid (not expired) and must match the name you used when booking exactly. No citizenship card, no national ID, no driving license, no photocopies. Original passport only.
What can I bring inside the test room?
Nothing personal. No phone, no watch, no wallet, no notebook, no pen and no paper — Pearson provides an erasable noteboard and marker at your station. Everything you bring (including the booking confirmation, which is no longer required at check-in) goes into a locker. Strict rule, enforced at every center.
Is there a break during PTE?
No scheduled break. The August 2025 format removed the 10-minute optional break entirely — the ~2-hour test runs continuously. You may take an unscheduled bathroom break, but the test clock keeps running and you cannot access your locker or speak to anyone.
What if I'm sick on test day?
Contact Pearson directly as soon as possible (before your test time). In some circumstances Pearson allows a free transfer to another date. If you simply don't show up, the fee is forfeited — no refund.
If you booked through us, ping us on WhatsApp too — we'll help liaise with Pearson on your behalf.
When you get your score, and what it means
PTE's fast result turnaround is one of its biggest advantages over IELTS. Here's exactly how it works.
How long does it take to get PTE results?
PTE Academic results are typically available within 2 business days. Most of our students get their score within 24–48 hours of the test. Pearson sends an email when the score is ready — you log into your Pearson account to view and download the score report.
How do I check my PTE score?
Log into your Pearson account at pearsonpte.com using the credentials you used to book. Your score report appears under "View Score Reports." You can download it as PDF or send it to universities directly from the same dashboard.
How is PTE scored?
PTE is scored entirely by AI using Pearson's Global Scale of English (10–90). You get:
- One overall score (10–90)
- Four communicative skills scores — Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing
- Six enabling skills scores — Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written Discourse
Each section of the test contributes to multiple skill scores, which is why a strong Read Aloud helps both your Speaking and your Reading score.
How do I send PTE scores to universities?
Through your Pearson web account. Open your score report, click "Send Scores," search for the institution and confirm. Sending scores is free and unlimited — unlike IELTS, where extra copies cost money. Most universities receive the score within 48 hours.
Will I get a paper PTE certificate?
No. Pearson does not issue paper certificates or paper score reports. Only the digital score sent directly via your Pearson account to an institution is considered official. Screenshots and printed PDFs are not accepted by universities — the score must be sent through Pearson's system.
Changed your mind? Here's how reschedule and refunds work
Pearson's rescheduling rules are time-sensitive. Get this wrong by a day and the full fee is forfeited.
Can I reschedule my PTE test?
Yes. The rules:
- 14+ days before your test date — free reschedule, no fee.
- 7–14 days before — partial fee charged (around 50% of the original fee).
- Less than 7 days — full fee forfeited; you must book a new test entirely.
Reschedule via your Pearson account, or message us on WhatsApp and we'll handle it.
Can I cancel my PTE test and get a refund?
Cancellation refunds follow the same window as reschedules: 14+ days before = full refund minus admin fee, 7–14 days = partial refund, less than 7 days = no refund. Refunds typically take 7–14 business days to land back in your account.
I didn't get the score I wanted. Can I retake PTE?
Yes. There's no limit on how many times you can take PTE — but you must wait until your previous score is released before booking the next attempt. Most students retake within 1–2 weeks. There's no cooling-off period between attempts.
How many times can I take PTE in a year?
Unlimited, in theory. Practically, the only limit is that you cannot book a new test until the previous score is released (2 business days). We've had students take 4–5 attempts before hitting their target — it's normal, not a red flag for visa applications.
How to prepare for PTE Academic
Quick honest advice on what actually moves your score, and what's a waste of time.
How long does it take to prepare for PTE?
For students already at a comfortable English level (IELTS 6.0+ equivalent), 2–4 weeks of focused PTE-specific prep is usually enough to hit 65+. For students starting weaker, plan 6–8 weeks. The format is highly predictable — most of the prep is learning question types and AI scoring quirks, not learning English from scratch.
What's the best way to prepare for PTE?
Three things, in order of impact:
- Take 3–5 full-length mock tests on a real Pearson scored-mock platform — not free YouTube samples. Mock test scores within 5 points of your actual PTE score are common.
- Practice Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence daily — they feed both Speaking and Reading scores.
- Master template-based answers for Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Essay and Summarize Written Text. Templates are not cheating — the AI rewards structure.
See our PTE online preparation page for the full plan.
Do you offer PTE coaching or only booking?
Both. We run online PTE preparation classes (live + recorded), 1:1 coaching with score guarantees, and Pearson-scored mock tests. Plus the booking service for students who only need a slot.
Details on our PTE online page.
Where can I get free PTE practice material?
Pearson's official site has a small bank of free samples at pearsonpte.com/test-takers/preparation. They're useful for understanding question types, but the difficulty is lower than the real test. For realistic mock tests at actual exam difficulty, paid scored mocks are worth the investment.
