PTE vs IELTS: Which Test Should You Take in Nepal?

Both PTE Academic and IELTS are accepted by universities and immigration authorities across Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Canada and the USA — so the real question is not which test is better, but which one fits your English, your budget, your deadline and where you live in Nepal. This guide gives you the official Pearson score conversion table, a side-by-side comparison of format and cost in NPR, which test each visa route actually accepts, and an honest answer on which one is easier for Nepali students.

The short answer

PTE or IELTS — Which Should You Choose?

Short answer

Choose PTE Academic if you are comfortable with computers, want your result in about 2 business days, and want more test dates to choose from. Choose IELTS if you prefer a human examiner, if you write better on paper, or if your university or visa route only accepts IELTS — IELTS also runs in more Nepali cities. Both tests are accepted for study in Australia, the UK, New Zealand and the USA. The one hard rule: for Canadian permanent residence (Express Entry, PNP, citizenship) you cannot use PTE Academic — you need PTE Core or IELTS General Training.

That is the honest summary, and for most Nepali students the decision comes down to three practical things rather than the tests themselves: how fast you need the score, how much you can pay, and how far you are willing to travel on test day. PTE tends to win on speed and on test-date availability outside Kathmandu, because Pearson now runs 12 authorised PTE centers across 6 cities in Nepal — Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Chitwan, Tilottama and Itahari. IELTS tends to win when a specific institution names it explicitly, or when a student genuinely freezes in front of a microphone but performs well talking to a person.

What does not meaningfully differ is the difficulty of the English itself. Both tests are mapped to the same CEFR levels, and Pearson's own concordance shows a clean band-to-score relationship. A student who would score IELTS 6.5 will land, on average, around PTE 55–62. Neither test is a shortcut — the difference is in the format, and format is something you can prepare for.

Do not pick a test based on a rumour that one is "easier". Pick the test your target university or visa route accepts, then pick the format that suits how you perform. A student who panics in a live interview will underperform on IELTS Speaking. A student who types slowly and mumbles will underperform on PTE. Match the test to yourself, not to a forum post.

The PTE fee is set in USD by Pearson, so the rupee amount moves with the exchange rate. PTE Nepal quotes the live NPR rate before you pay, and you can settle in rupees via eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay or bank transfer with no USD card needed — message us for today's rate.

The integrated-task difference matters more than students expect. In PTE, a single task such as "Read Aloud" contributes to both your Reading and Speaking scores, and "Summarise Written Text" feeds both Reading and Writing. This means a weakness in one skill can quietly drag down a second score. In IELTS, each of the four sections is scored independently.
Official concordance

PTE to IELTS Score Conversion Table (Official Pearson Data)

Quick conversion

According to Pearson's official concordance, PTE 47–54 is equivalent to IELTS 6.0, PTE 55–62 equals IELTS 6.5, PTE 63–70 equals IELTS 7.0, PTE 71–78 equals IELTS 7.5 and PTE 79–85 equals IELTS 8.0. A perfect PTE 90 corresponds to IELTS 9.0.

This is the table almost every student is really looking for. The figures below come from Pearson's official PTE Academic and IELTS Academic score concordance, updated in July 2025. Note that the conversion is not the same for every skill — the Speaking and Writing bands convert quite differently from Listening and Reading, which is why using an overall-score-only conversion can mislead you when a university sets minimum per-skill requirements.

Highlighted rows are the bands most Nepali students are asked for (IELTS 6.0 to 7.5). Pearson states these values represent an approximate relationship and that measurement error is inherent when comparing two different tests — institutions are advised to read the concordance alongside CEFR alignment rather than treat it as an exact swap.

Watch the Speaking column. Notice that IELTS Speaking 6.0 maps to a wide PTE Speaking range of 54–65, and IELTS 6.5 maps to 66–75. PTE Speaking scores spread out far more than the other skills, which is why students often see a Speaking score that looks nothing like their IELTS expectation. This is a scale difference, not a marking error.
Reverse lookup

What PTE Score Do I Need for IELTS 6.5, 7.0 or 7.5?

Most Nepali students are not chasing a PTE score for its own sake — they have been given an IELTS requirement by a university or an agent and need to know the PTE equivalent. Here is the practical translation, with a margin built in.

IELTS 6.0

Aim for PTE 50+

The official band is PTE 47–54. Target 50 or above so a single weak section does not push you under. Common for foundation and some diploma programmes.

IELTS 6.5

Aim for PTE 58+

The official band is PTE 55–62. Target 58 or above. This is the single most requested requirement for Australian and UK undergraduate and master's entry.

IELTS 7.0

Aim for PTE 65+

The official band is PTE 63–70. Target 65 or above. Typical for nursing, teaching, engineering registration and skilled-migration points.

IELTS 7.5

Aim for PTE 73+

The official band is PTE 71–78. Target 73 or above. Required by a smaller number of competitive programmes and professional bodies.

Always check the per-skill minimum, not just the overall. A university asking for "IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0" translates to roughly PTE 58 overall with no communicative skill below about 50. Students frequently hit the overall target, miss one skill minimum, and have to sit the whole test again. If you are unsure how your target maps, send us the requirement and we will convert it properly.
The real differences

Key Differences Between PTE and IELTS

1. Speaking: a microphone versus a person

This is the biggest practical difference and the one that decides the test for most students. In PTE, you speak into a headset microphone at a computer, in a room where other candidates are also speaking. There is no examiner, no eye contact, and no conversation — you respond to prompts on screen and the AI scores your fluency, pronunciation and content.

IELTS in Nepal works differently from what most students expect. You still get a real human examiner, but the interview is conducted as a live video call from a room at the test centre, using a headset the centre provides — not sitting across a desk from the examiner. The content, timing, scoring and security are identical to an in-person interview: an 11 to 14 minute conversation that includes a two-minute solo talk. So you get the benefit of a human marker who can follow nuance, but through a screen rather than in the same room.

Neither is objectively easier. Students who get nervous under a human gaze usually do better on PTE. Students who rely on natural conversational rhythm, and who find the surrounding noise of a PTE room distracting, usually do better on IELTS. If you have never spoken into a headset for 30 minutes straight, that is worth practising before you decide.

2. Scoring: AI consistency versus human judgement

PTE is machine-scored, which makes it highly consistent and completely blind to your accent, appearance or nerves — but it also means it rewards the specific things the algorithm measures. Clear pronunciation, steady pace without long pauses, and hitting the required content keywords matter enormously. IELTS is human-marked, which allows an examiner to recognise intelligent, nuanced English that an algorithm may miss, but introduces a small amount of subjectivity between examiners.

3. Speed of results

PTE results are typically available within 2 business days and occasionally take up to 5. IELTS in Nepal is computer-delivered, so results usually arrive in 3 to 5 days. The gap is smaller than it used to be, but if you are working against a university deadline, a CAS deadline or a visa filing date, those extra days still matter — and it remains one of the most common reasons students in Nepal choose PTE.

4. Integrated versus independent tasks

PTE deliberately blends skills. "Read Aloud" scores both Reading and Speaking. "Summarise Written Text" scores both Reading and Writing. "Write from Dictation" feeds Listening and Writing. The upside is efficiency: a strong performance lifts two scores at once. The downside is exposure: one persistent weakness can suppress multiple scores. IELTS keeps the four sections separate, so a weak Writing score damages only Writing.

5. Test-date availability across Nepal

PTE is delivered at 12 authorised centers in 6 Nepali cities — five in Kathmandu, one in Lalitpur, two in Pokhara, two in Chitwan, one in Tilottama (next to Butwal) and one in Itahari — with several centers running six or seven days a week. IELTS, run by British Council Nepal and IDP Education Nepal, reaches more cities: Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar, Birtamode, Itahari, Ghorahi, Banepa and Nepalgunj.

The honest summary is that IELTS wins on geographic reach while PTE wins on frequency. If you live in Birtamode, Ghorahi, Banepa or Nepalgunj, IELTS is likely the closer option. If you are in Kathmandu, Pokhara or Chitwan, PTE gives you multiple competing centers and far more available slots per week, which matters when an intake deadline is close. Honest answer

Which Test Is Easier — PTE or IELTS?

Short answer

Neither test is easier overall — they are mapped to the same CEFR levels and the same English ability produces a comparable result on both. PTE is usually easier for students who are confident with computers and dislike being interviewed by a person. IELTS is usually easier for students with strong conversational English who find typing and headset speaking unnatural. Note that IELTS Speaking in Nepal is a video call with an examiner, not a desk-side interview.

You will read a lot of claims online that PTE is the easier test. That reputation comes mostly from three real but narrow advantages: the AI does not judge your accent, the result arrives faster, and the Writing tasks are shorter and more formulaic. Those are genuine, and for a certain kind of student they translate into a higher score. But PTE also punishes things IELTS forgives — long hesitations, unclear consonants, going over or under the word count, and mis-managing time on a screen that does not let you go back.

PTE is likely easier for you if…

  • You type reasonably fast and are comfortable working on a computer
  • You get nervous being interviewed by a person, even over video
  • You have a clear, steady speaking pace even if your accent is strong
  • You need your result in days, not weeks
  • You want more test dates to choose from, including weekends
  • You prefer predictable, template-friendly writing tasks

IELTS is likely easier for you if…

  • You speak fluently and naturally with people
  • You are slow at typing or dislike reading long text on screen
  • You hesitate, self-correct and restart often when speaking
  • You write better by hand than by keyboard — IELTS in Nepal offers a hybrid option with Writing on paper
  • Your university or visa route explicitly requires IELTS
  • You find background noise from other candidates distracting
  • You live in a city PTE does not reach — such as Biratnagar, Birtamode, Ghorahi, Banepa or Nepalgunj
A practical way to decide: take one free scored mock of each. Two hours of honest testing tells you more than a month of reading comparisons. Acceptance

PTE vs IELTS for Visas and Immigration — What Is Actually Accepted

This is where a wrong choice costs real money, because acceptance depends on the route, not just the country. The most common and most expensive mistake Nepali applicants make is sitting PTE Academic for Canadian permanent residence, which does not accept it.

RoutePTEIELTS
Australia — study, work & migration visasPTE Academic acceptedAccepted
New Zealand — study, work & migrationPTE Academic acceptedAccepted
UK — universitiesPTE Academic acceptedAccepted
UK — visa requiring SELTMust be PTE Academic UKVIMust be IELTS for UKVI
Canada — study permit & university entryPTE Academic acceptedAccepted
Canada — PR, Express Entry, PNP, citizenshipPTE Academic NOT accepted — you need PTE CoreIELTS General Training accepted
USA — universitiesPTE Academic widely acceptedAccepted
The Canada trap — read this twice. For Canadian immigration programmes such as Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, work permits and citizenship, IRCC requires PTE Core, not PTE Academic. For a Canadian study permit or university admission you generally need PTE Academic, not PTE Core. They are two different tests with two different bookings. Every year students in Nepal sit the wrong one and pay twice — if Canada is your destination, confirm which route you are on before you book.

For the UK, note the separate requirement carefully: a university may happily accept a standard PTE Academic score, but if your visa category requires a Secure English Language Test, only the UKVI version taken at an approved UKVI center counts. The test content is the same; the booking, the center approval and the certificate are not. If you are unsure which version you need, talk to us before booking rather than after.

Nepal costs

PTE vs IELTS Cost and Availability in Nepal (2026)

The two tests cost broadly the same in Nepal. Because the PTE fee is set in USD by Pearson, its rupee figure moves with the exchange rate, so we quote the live NPR amount when you book rather than publishing a number that goes stale — see our voucher page or message us for today's rate.

TestFeeNotes
PTE AcademicLive NPR rate on requestSet in USD by Pearson; payable in rupees through PTE Nepal via eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay or bank transfer
IELTS on ComputerNPR 33,000Rises to NPR 36,000 from 1 May 2026
IELTS for UKVI (computer)NPR 36,400Required for UK SELT visa routes
IELTS Life Skills A1/B1NPR 27,400Family and settlement visa routes only

IELTS fees shown are the published British Council and IDP rates for Nepal; the computer-delivered fee has an increase scheduled from 1 May 2026. Note that there is no fully paper-based IELTS in Nepal — the test is computer-delivered, with a hybrid option where the Writing section is completed on paper.

Availability is where the two tests genuinely differ, and not in the direction most comparison articles claim. IELTS actually has wider geographic coverage in Nepal: between British Council Nepal and IDP Education Nepal, testing runs in around ten cities including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar, Birtamode, Itahari, Ghorahi, Banepa and Nepalgunj. PTE has 12 centers across 6 citiesfive in Kathmandu, two in Pokhara, two in Chitwan, plus Lalitpur, Tilottama and Itahari.

So if you live in Birtamode, Ghorahi or Nepalgunj, IELTS may be the shorter journey. What PTE offers instead is density and frequency where it does operate — five competing centers in Kathmandu, some running all seven days, which means far more slots in any given week and less waiting when an intake deadline is close. Whichever test forces you to travel, budget a bus fare, a night's stay and a day off work: that is usually NPR 3,000 to 6,000 of hidden cost that matters more than the fee difference.

A warning about "cheap" PTE vouchers. If someone offers you a PTE booking far below the official fee, walk away. Vouchers bought with stolen cards are the single most common reason students get permanently banned from PTE and lose their scores — read what happens when an account is restricted. PTE Nepal books at the cheapest legitimate live NPR rate, and you can see our voucher pricing openly.
Decision guide

So Which One Should You Book?

Work through these in order. The first one that applies to you decides the test — do not overthink the rest.

  1. 1

Does your university or visa route name a specific test?

If the requirement letter says IELTS only, take IELTS. If it accepts either, continue. If you are applying for Canadian PR, you need PTE Core or IELTS General Training — PTE Academic is not an option.

  2. 2

    How soon is your deadline?

If you need a result inside a week, PTE's 2-business-day turnaround is the safer choice. IELTS in Nepal typically takes 3 to 5 days — usually fine, but tight if your deadline is days away.

  3. 3

How do you perform when speaking?

If you speak more confidently to a person than to a microphone, IELTS suits you — bearing in mind the examiner joins by video call, not in person. If being interviewed makes you freeze but you can talk steadily to a screen, PTE suits you.

  4. 4

Where do you live, and what is the real total cost?

Add travel and accommodation to the fee. A test 20 minutes from home at a similar price beats a marginally cheaper test that costs you two days and a bus ticket. Check both: IELTS covers more cities, while PTE has more centers and dates in the six cities where it operates.

  5. 5

Still tied? Take one mock of each.

Convert both results with the table above. Whichever gives the higher band for the same effort is your test. If they match, book the one with the earlier date near you.

FAQs

PTE vs IELTS — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PTE and IELTS?

PTE Academic is a fully computer-based English test scored by AI, lasting about 2 hours, with results typically in 2 business days and scores reported from 10 to 90. IELTS in Nepal is computer-delivered (with a hybrid option where Writing is done on paper), is marked by human examiners, lasts about 2 hours 45 minutes, reports scores in bands from 1.0 to 9.0, and takes 3 to 5 days. The biggest practical difference is Speaking: PTE is recorded into a microphone, while IELTS is a live video call with a human examiner at the test centre.

What PTE score is equal to IELTS 6.5?

According to Pearson's official concordance, IELTS 6.5 is equivalent to PTE 55–62 overall. We recommend targeting at least PTE 58 so that one weaker section does not drop you below the band. If your university also sets per-skill minimums, check those separately — the skill-level conversion differs from the overall conversion, particularly for Speaking.

What PTE score is equal to IELTS 7?

IELTS 7.0 is equivalent to PTE 63–70 overall. Aim for PTE 65 or above to give yourself a safety margin. IELTS 7.0 is commonly required for nursing, teaching, engineering registration and skilled-migration points, and those routes usually also specify a minimum in each of the four skills.

Which test is easier, PTE or IELTS?

Neither is easier overall — both are aligned to the same CEFR levels, so the same English ability produces a comparable result. PTE is usually easier for students who are comfortable with computers, type reasonably fast, and get nervous being interviewed by a person. IELTS is usually easier for students with strong conversational English who dislike typing or find headset speaking unnatural. The honest test is to sit one scored mock of each and compare.

Is PTE accepted for Canadian immigration?

Not PTE Academic. For Canadian permanent residence routes — Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, work permits and citizenship — IRCC requires PTE Core or IELTS General Training. PTE Academic is not accepted for these programmes. However, PTE Academic is accepted for Canadian study permits and university admission. Confirm which route you are applying under before booking, because these are two separate tests.

How much does PTE cost compared to IELTS in Nepal?

The two tests cost broadly the same in Nepal. IELTS on Computer is NPR 33,000 (rising to NPR 36,000 from 1 May 2026), IELTS for UKVI on computer is NPR 36,400, and IELTS Life Skills A1/B1 is NPR 27,400. The PTE Academic fee is set in USD by Pearson, so its rupee figure moves with the exchange rate — PTE Nepal quotes the live NPR rate before you book, payable via eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay or bank transfer. The bigger cost difference is usually travel and accommodation rather than the fee itself.

How long are PTE and IELTS scores valid?

Both PTE Academic and IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. Some institutions and immigration programmes impose a shorter window of their own, so check the specific requirement — a score that is technically still valid may be too old for a particular application.

How fast do PTE results come compared to IELTS?

PTE Academic results are typically available within 2 business days, occasionally taking up to 5. IELTS in Nepal is computer-delivered, so results typically take 3 to 5 days. If you are working to a tight university or visa deadline, those extra days are often the deciding factor.

Can I retake PTE or IELTS if I am not happy with my score?

Yes, both tests allow unlimited retakes. For PTE you must wait until you receive your result before booking the next attempt, and you cannot hold two bookings at the same time. IELTS has no mandatory waiting period. Because each retake costs a full fee, it is worth diagnosing exactly which skill lost you the marks before rebooking — read our guide to improving your score.

Which test has more centers in Nepal?

It depends on whether you mean centers or cities. PTE has 12 authorised Pearson centers across 6 cities — five in Kathmandu, one in Lalitpur, two in Pokhara, two in Chitwan, one in Tilottama and one in Itahari — with some running all seven days. IELTS, delivered by British Council Nepal and IDP Education Nepal, covers more cities: Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar, Birtamode, Itahari, Ghorahi, Banepa and Nepalgunj. So IELTS has broader geographic reach, while PTE offers more centers and more available dates within the cities where it operates.

Do I need a different PTE test for a UK visa?

Yes, if your visa category requires a Secure English Language Test. UK universities generally accept standard PTE Academic, but UK visa routes needing a SELT require PTE Academic UKVI, taken at an approved UKVI center. The test content is the same, but the booking and the certificate are different. The IELTS equivalent is IELTS for UKVI.

Is the PTE score conversion to IELTS exact?

No — it is an approximate concordance. Pearson publishes the mapping (last updated July 2025) but states clearly that measurement error is inherent when comparing two different tests, and advises institutions to consider it alongside CEFR alignment rather than as an exact swap. Treat the table as a reliable planning guide, and always aim a few points above the minimum rather than exactly at it.

Which test should I take if I am weak at speaking?

It depends on why you are weak. If you have a strong accent but speak at a steady, clear pace, PTE often scores you better because the AI does not penalise accent and there is no examiner to be nervous in front of. If you hesitate frequently, restart sentences or pause for long stretches, PTE will penalise that heavily — IELTS examiners are more tolerant of natural self-correction, so IELTS may suit you better. Note that IELTS Speaking in Nepal happens over a video call, which some students find less intimidating than sitting opposite an examiner.

Can I switch from IELTS to PTE after already taking IELTS?

Yes. There is no restriction on taking both tests, and many students in Nepal sit IELTS first and then switch to PTE for a faster result or an earlier date. Use the concordance table above to work out the PTE score you need to match or beat your existing IELTS band, and make sure your target institution accepts PTE before you book. Message us your IELTS band and we will convert it for you.
