Key Differences Between PTE and IELTS
1. Speaking: a microphone versus a person
This is the biggest practical difference and the one that decides the test for most students. In PTE, you speak into a headset microphone at a computer, in a room where other candidates are also speaking. There is no examiner, no eye contact, and no conversation — you respond to prompts on screen and the AI scores your fluency, pronunciation and content.
IELTS in Nepal works differently from what most students expect. You still get a real human examiner, but the interview is conducted as a live video call from a room at the test centre, using a headset the centre provides — not sitting across a desk from the examiner. The content, timing, scoring and security are identical to an in-person interview: an 11 to 14 minute conversation that includes a two-minute solo talk. So you get the benefit of a human marker who can follow nuance, but through a screen rather than in the same room.
Neither is objectively easier. Students who get nervous under a human gaze usually do better on PTE. Students who rely on natural conversational rhythm, and who find the surrounding noise of a PTE room distracting, usually do better on IELTS. Which Test Is Easier — PTE or IELTS?
